New Built Conservation Services

Published: 11/10/2021

Flintshire County Council has introduced several enhancements to the services it provides in relation to built conservation and listed buildings.

From this month the following formalised services are available:

• Listed Building and Conservation Area pre-application advice –to encourage prospective applicants for listed building and conservation area consent to discuss their proposals with Council officers before submitting a formal application. A small fee will be charged for this advice – details available on the website.

• Listed Building pre-purchase advice – to help prospective owners understand that ownership of a listed building carries with it added responsibilities and to offer the benefit of the Council’s knowledge and advice about the listed buildings. Again a modest charge will be made for this service – details available on the website.

• Historic Building Repair Grant - The Council recognises that the maintenance and repair of listed and other heritage buildings can place a significant burden on owners, particularly in terms of the cost of repairs. To help owners, we have developed a building repair grant scheme that will run for this and the next financial year in a pilot form.

Flintshire’s Cabinet Member for Planning and Public Protection, Councillor Chris Bithell, said:

“The Council has found that some applications lack detail and the intention in offering a pre-application advice service is to improve the quality of formal applications, which in turn will speed up their consideration and determination”.

“I am delighted to announce the availability of these new services from within my portfolio. The conservation of our built heritage is an important matter and an area I have a particular interest in, given the range and quality of heritage assets that Flintshire has. These services are aimed at assisting owners and prospective owners of listed buildings to better understand their properties and the requirements that go with ownership, both in terms of maintenance and also the degree to which further changes can be made to a listed building. I am particularly pleased that the Council has been able to develop a modest grant funding scheme to support essential repairs, and look forward to being able to assist owners in this way.”
