Sexual health clinics are sometimes known as genito-urinary medicine (GUM) clinics. GUM deals with the male and female sexual organs and the urinary system. You can make an appointment to see someone at a sexual health clinic without being referred by your GP.

Sexual health clinics can give you tests for sexual and urinary health problems – such as sexually transmitted infections (STI’s), cystitis, and thrush. At most GUM clinics you can make an appointment for a general check up, which also include tests for a range of STIs.

GUM clinics can also provide contraceptive advice, including free emergency contraception and condoms. Some clinics may also be able to write a prescription for the contraceptive pill, and provide cervical smear tests. They can also offer advice and counselling on a range of sexual health issues, and provide support if you're having an HIV test, or if you have been diagnosed as HIV positive.

If you visit a GUM clinic, everything that is discussed is completely confidential. Your GP will not be told about your visit, and you do not have to give your real name if you do not want to.

"Which? Birth Choice

Visit Website

"Which? Birth Choice is a website that provides everything expectant mothers need to know to decide where to have their baby. As a not-for-profit organisation, Which? wanted to use available data to empower women to make an informed decision about where to give birth. So, in partnership with the maternity data experts BirthChoiceUK, Which? Birth Choice was launched in January 2014.

The free to use website helps expectant parents understand their birth choices by providing overviews of the different birth environments to help women decide if they would like to have their baby in a labour ward, birth centre or at home. Our interactive ‘Find and Compare’ tool takes into account an individual's preferences and circumstances and asks for their post-code to suggest which maternity setting would be their best fit. Each maternity unit in the UK has an individual unit page so that women and their partners can find out more.
