The beautiful story of ‘The Secret Garden’ will be brought to life by school pupils this July. Pupils from Ysgol Trelogan and Ysgol Brynffordd in Flintshire and Ysgol y Rhos, in Denbighshire are taking part in Flintshire’s Schools in Performance on Friday 4 July at Clwyd Theatr Cymru. Noted as one of the best childrens books of the twentieth century the ‘Secret Garden’ is a novel by Frances Hodgson Burnett and is a classic of English childrens literature. Working with a team of professionals, under the artistic direction of BAFTA nominated writer Janys Chambers, designer Andrea Davies and visual artist Sarah Carvel the pupils will create all the props and scenery for the production and assist Janys Chambers in writing the dialogue. Janys has written over 100 radio, theatre and television scripts for the BBC, TV soap Emmerdale, Holby and Children’s Ward and her recent work includes her adaptation of My Family and Other Animals for York Theatre Royal. Councillor Chris Bithell, Cabinet Member for Education said: “This is an exemplary example of local authorities working together to give an excellent opportunity for young people to engage with professional artists and to perform on a professional stage.” Flintshire Schools in Performance is organised by Flintshire County Council’s Arts, Culture and Events Section and The Secret Garden production has been part funded the Arts Council of Wales and Literature Wales.
