Flintshire County Council has received a tennis association award to recognise
the contribution made towards developing the sport in the County.
Tennis Wales have praised the Council’s Sports Development department for the
work they have done to encourage youngsters to get involved in tennis.
The award for Local Authority Contribution was presented to the Council at
Buckley Leisure Centre during the Great British Tennis Weekend in May which is
an event designed to promote tennis across the country.
Activities have included a tennis roadshow for primary school children; primary
and secondary school tennis tournaments; teacher and coach education training
courses; inclusive tennis sessions and the creation of two new tennis clubs at
Buckley and Holywell.
Councillor Kevin Jones, Cabinet Member for Leisure said: “We are delighted to
have received the award to highlight the work the Council is doing to promote
tennis. Getting involved in sport brings so many benefits and I hope the
refurbished courts in the County and all the activities on offer will encourage
people to pick up a racket and join in.”
Peter Drew, Chief Executive of Tennis Wales said: “Congratulations to
Flintshire County Council for winning this award which is very well deserved.
Our Local Authority partners are crucial for getting more people playing and
enjoying tennis in the community. Flintshire County Council have provided
fantastic support in helping to implement new tennis opportunities for the
community across Flintshire, especially with our drive to get more tennis
opportunities in Leisure Centres and other Community Centres.
“We know that there are a huge number of people who would like to play tennis,
but not necessarily within a formal tennis club so the work that Flintshire
County Council is doing to help open up these new tennis opportunities is
fantastic.”
