Residents invited to have their say on weed management across Flintshire
Published: 22/10/2026
Flintshire County Council is asking residents to share their views on how weeds are managed on the county’s roads, pavements and other public spaces.
Feedback gathered during the consultation will help inform decisions, future policy and how the Council balances public safety, environmental considerations and making best use of available resources.
Weed control plays an important role in maintaining safe and accessible roads and pavements by preventing weeds from obstructing walkways, restricting visibility, damaging road surfaces and affecting drainage systems, along with negatively affecting the appearance of public spaces.
In recent years, the Council has significantly reduced its use of glyphosate-based herbicides and now uses a range of alternative methods of weed management. This includes a combination of mechanical brushing, mowing, hand weeding, hot foam, steam and hot water treatments.
These methods can require more frequent visits and more employee time, meaning it is not possible to maintain all locations to the same standard, at all times.
The move away from glyphosate comes in response to growing concerns about the potential impact of chemical weed killers on the environment and human health.
Councillor Ted Palmer, Cabinet Member for Highways, Assets and Public Protection, said: “Managing weeds is about striking the right balance between keeping our communities safe and accessible and keeping our streets looking clean, tidy and well-maintained, while protecting the environment, promoting biodiversity and making the best use of public funds.
“We are really keen to hear residents’ views as we continue to shape and adapt our new approach.”
