Landfill Tax Funding
Published: 19/09/2014
Community groups could begin to benefit from a landfill site funding scheme
once a report has been discussed at a Cabinet meeting on Tuesday (16 September).
The Landfill Communities Fund (LCF) is an innovative tax credit scheme which
offsets some of the negative impacts of landfill site operations. Under the
scheme, landfill operators are able to pay a proportion of their landfill tax
liability to ‘not-for-profit’ organisations which deliver projects for the
benefit of communities and the environment in the vicinity of a landfill site.
The Welsh Government introduced a tax on landfill waste in 1996 to help reduce
the amount of material sent to landfill and in order to promote more
environmentally sustainable methods of waste management and disposal.
Any ‘not for profit’ organisation can apply for funding directly to Cory
Environmental Trust including Community and County Councils assuming the bid
meets the criteria and that the organisation is able to provide 10 percent of
the contributions and applications are assessed quarterly.
More information will be sent to Town and Community Councils and to local
members providing them with information on the application process and details
on how to make a submission will also be provided on the Council’s website.
Councillor Kevin Jones, Cabinet Member for Waste Strategy, Public Protection
and Leisure said: “This is a great way of using an environmental tax for the
good of the surrounding communities and I’d urge anyone in the area who might
need funding for a project to look at the guidelines and see whether they could
benefit.”
