Flintshire’s first columbaria installed at cemetery
Published: 17/04/2026
Families in Flintshire now have access to a new above-ground memorial option to remember their loved ones, following the completion of the county’s first columbaria.
Located in Buckley Cemetery, the columbaria is a granite structure providing a lasting space for the storage of cremated remains, with 36 individual niches available.
Each niche can accommodate two sets of remains with the option for a personalised inscription on the plaque at the front.
The introduction of the columbaria marks an innovative step in making more efficient use of limited cemetery space, offering a sustainable alternative to traditional earth interments.
If successful, the Council will consider installing similar structures in its other cemeteries.
The surrounding area will also be enhanced to support biodiversity and local habitats, creating a tranquil and reflective space for visitors.
Katie Wilby, Chief Officer for Streetscene and Transportation, said: “We are pleased to have completed the installation of Flintshire’s first columbaria, offering residents more choice in how to commemorate their loved ones in our cemeteries.
“This allows us to make the best use of available space while providing a peaceful area for reflection.”
