20 mph zones nearing completion

Published: 29/08/2014

The first phase of a project to provide 20mph speed limit advisory signs outside every school in Flintshire has been completed. Out of 83 schools in Flintshire – 40 will have the new 20mph zone signs in time for the start of the new September term. Signs already existed at 19 schools and the remaining 24 are due to be finished in October. Flintshire County Council received the final approval from Welsh Government to provide the signs outside schools in the County in July and has been working to put up as many as possible before children return to school. Deputy Leader of Flintshire County Council, Councillor Bernie Attridge, who championed the scheme said: I am so pleased to announce that we have finished the first step in the scheme and that we are on track have the 20mph speed limit signs outside every school by October. Delivering 20mph zones outside of the County’s schools has been a priority for this administration and once installed the new arrangements will help improve road safety by making drivers more aware of the school location which will help ensure they reduce their speed accordingly. Clearly speed is a key factor in road safety and this is a major step forward in protecting the safety of our children. Resurfacing work has also been completed outside three schools in Connahs’s Quay, Mold and Flint as part of the on going programme of highway improvement work which began earlier this year. The work at these sites was undertaken during the summer holidays in order to reduce the impact on the schools.
