Commissioner visits Marleyfield House

Published: 14/05/2025

Flintshire County Council recently had the pleasure of welcoming Rhian Bowen-Davies, Older People's Commissioner for Wales to Marleyfield House, Residential Care Home, Buckley.

Rhian took up post as Older People’s Commissioner at the end of September 2024 and ensures older people's voices are heard, that they have choice and control and receive the support and services they need, while safeguarding their human rights.

Marleyfield House provides vital support both for older people looking for long term residential care and those in need of shorter-term support/therapies to enable a return to independent living at home after a spell in hospital.

During her visit, the Commissioner was given a tour, meeting permanent and short-term residents and talking to them about the care and support they receive along with their personal experiences of living or staying at the home.Marleyfield visit 1.png

The Commissioner also received a presentation on the Council’s plans for its next new care home - Ty Croes Atti, Flint.   Welsh Government, Betsi Cadwaladr University Hospital, Flintshire County Council and other stakeholders have worked together on the development of this new state of the art facility which will provide vital services similar to those at Marleyfield House.

Older People's Commissioner, Rhian Bowen-Davies said: “It was a pleasure to visit Marleyfield House and meet with older people and staff to learn more about the positive impact being made by the care and support being delivered there.

“It was great to see such a strong focus at Marleyfield on tailoring support to meet people’s individual needs and that this approach will be adopted more widely across Flintshire as part of future plans.”

Cabinet Member for Social Services, Councillor Christine Jones said: "I was so pleased to welcome Rhian to Marleyfield House and to have had the opportunity to share our achievements with her. Demand for social care is growing yet we continue to face challenging budget settlements from national governments. Investing to save is something we are passionate about here in Flintshire.

“Identifying solutions to situations before they become a crisis is one of the ways we can work with partners to reduce demands on services.  More importantly, however, it enables us to provide local people and their families with access to local services which enable a range of independent living options that suit the needs of the individual.  I am extremely proud of Marleyfield House and I cannot wait to see the first residents through the doors at Ty Croes Atti later this year."
