North East Wales Metro update

Published: 06/12/2018

Flintshire County Council’s Environment Overview and Scrutiny Committee will receive an update on Flintshire County Council’s and Welsh Government’s work on the North East Wales Metro project at their meeting next week.

The Metro forms part of the Council’s wider Integrated Transport Strategy which is designed to provide a sustainable, affordable and environmentally friendly transport service for all areas of the County.

Flintshire has been successful in a recent bid for additional funding from Welsh Government for various Metro projects which will improve the access to the employment sites in Deeside from the rest of Flintshire, in the first instance.

The funding is over a three year rolling period (2019 – 2021 and will allow the following schemes to be delivered:

  1. B5129 Queensferry Roundabout to Denbighshire County Boundary - interlinking of three main elements which will exemplify a Quality Travel Corridor along the B5129 between Queensferry and the Denbighshire Border.
  2. Partial signalisation of Parkway Roundabout – Zone 2 Deeside Industrial Park.  This will provide direct management of traffic exiting Parkway without unduly impacting upon eastbound traffic flows. The proposed improvements will reduce congestion, improve journey times and accessibility to employment opportunities whilst also addressing the current accident history experienced at this location.
  3. Deeside Industrial Park – Completion of Active Travel Routes and Bus Stop Infrastructure (Zone 2) which will provide southerly access to the National Cycle Network via the existing combined Bus / Cycle only link to Zone 3.
  4. A5104 Broughton to Saltney Cycleway Phase 2 - a proposed 1.5 km shared use walking / cycling route located along the East bound side of the A5104 between Broughton and Saltney which will link communities such as Saltney, Saltney Ferry, Bretton and Broughton with Chester and principal employment and retail sites.  There will be benefits for transport access along the route for communities at the western end of the County.

Flintshire County Council’s Cabinet Member for Streetscene and Countryside, Councillor Carolyn Thomas, said:

“The Metro project is really exciting for the County and it’s great to see it taking shape, with the Active Travel Routes on Zone 3 of the Deeside Industrial Park completed in September this year.  This Welsh Government funding is welcomed and it shows what can be achieved when the Council works closely with Welsh Government and local businesses to come up with solutions that will aid the long term development of the whole area and protect the jobs of the people who work there."
