The 12th Big Dee Day is fast approaching

This year’s Big Dee Day is launched on Friday, 14 September and Flintshire County Council is once again very proud to be a part of one of the biggest community and conservation based events in North East Wales and North West England.

The event for which Flintshire, Cheshire and National Resources Wales are key stakeholders has also branched out in recent years to include Shropshire, Wrexham and Denbighshire working together on this the annual clean-up of the River Dee and its catchment area covering miles of coastline from Talacre to Chester and Llangollen and north Shropshire.

This annual event, supported by many community groups and numerous businesses including Tesco, Airbus, Kingspan, ENI, and many more sees  hundreds of people take part working hard to clear river environment collecting hundreds of bags of litter as well as sprucing up the special places along the River Dee’s banks, coast and catchment area. In Flintshire, the efforts are coordinated by the Council's Countryside Rangers who take the opportunity to work with local businesses, conservation and community groups, to plant trees and bulbs paint bench with tons of rubbish from Flintshire's coast and coastal communities also being removed. It has also initiated coastal regeneration hand in glove with the Wales Coast path

Councillor Carolyn Thomas, Cabinet Member for Streetscene and Countryside Services said:

“There's a real sense of community pride in the Big Dee Day and the event has got bigger every year since it was first established by the Council's Countryside Service in 2007.

“The community and business volunteers play a huge part in helping to ensure our coastline is kept clean for both visitors and wildlife with thousands of bags of litter collected by hundreds of volunteers over the last 11 years. I am sure this year's event will build on the fantastic efforts of previous years when so many people came together to help look after and protect our local environment. Everyone’s efforts are much appreciated."
