Cultural Olympiad Launch - 29 September - Published: 26/09/2011

Spirits of Dragons: Cultural Olympiad Launch – Thursday 29 September, Flint Town Hall, 2pm

Cauldrons and Furnaces – Flint Castle

2012 will see the Olympics coming to the UK and, to celebrate the occasion, running alongside the sporting preparations, the whole country has been involved in the Cultural Olympiad initiative.

Flintshire is proud to be hosting one of eight ‘Cauldrons and Furnaces’ Cultural Olympiad events within Wales, in partnership with CADW. Flintshire’s event will see Flint Castle come to life on 22 and 23 June 2012.

Over 300 young people from Flintshire’s schools are already involved in the project, creating scripts, music and dance for the performance in 2012, and, from January, there will be opportunities for all ages and abilities from across the county to participate in a wide variety of arts experiences.

The Cauldrons and Furnaces project is funded by the Legacy Trust and sponsorship has come from local businesses including Kimberley Clarke and NicePak, with in kind support from P.J. Colours, HSS Hire Shop, Tata Steel and SciTech Adhesive.

On Thursday 29 September at 2pm in Flint Town Hall, the Arts, Culture and Events section of Flintshire County Council will be launching a programme of workshops and partnership opportunities for Flintshire’s communities and businesses to be involved in this once in a lifetime spectacular event.

The story so far

The Flint Cauldrons and Furnaces Project has worked with schools across the region over the last three years, interpreting the heritage and history of Flint Castle, through a variety of artistic styles and methods, incorporating dance, music, drama and visual arts. Each year of the project has concentrated on a specific performing art form with professional artists of the highest calibre working with young people from the area to create inspirational visual experiences for audiences from across Flintshire. These projects will culminate in a performance in Flint Castle, as part of the national initiative to welcome the Olympics to the United Kingdom.

The performance in Flint Castle

This epic and spectacular performance will combine a wide variety of artistic skills to bring to life the history, magic, myth and mystery surrounding Flint Castle. From the mists of time, giants of Kings and Princes from England, Wales and beyond will threaten and defend the Castle, while dragons stalk the grounds. Hoards of invading tribes will battle with displays of physical prowess. Swords will clash and canon shot will reverberate through the Castle as water and fire rage and envelop the site. The walls and towers of the Castle will mysteriously rise in front of the promenading audience. Feats of physical dexterity, performed by the young cast, will amaze, as jugglers, stilt walkers, acrobats, dancers, and armed combatants give a unique performance of storytelling and history-making in a breathtaking and colourful feast of sound and visual delight, which builds to an exciting and exhilarating climax of colour, movement and artistic unity. The whole performance emphasises the endurance and indomitable Spirit of Wales; the importance of our artistic and cultural legacy; and the value of international understanding and integration.

The performance will take place on Saturday 23 June 2012 at Flint Castle.
