Flexible Retirement
If you are age 55 or over it is possible to continue in employment and receive the pension benefits that you have already accrued. You can only retire on flexible grounds if you have your employer’s consent to either:
- Reduce the number of hours you work per week, or
- Reduce your grade of employment
Flexible retirement requires your employer’s consent as there will be a cost to the employer for allowing early release of benefits.
Please note that there may be a reduction on your pension if you take it before age 65 on flexible retirement grounds.
It is at your employer’s discretion whether they award flexible retirement. For further information on this option, you should contact your employer.

If you have at least 3 months total membership or have brought a transfer value into the LGPS, you can leave employment voluntarily and receive your pension benefits at any time from age 60 onwards.
If you are asked to retire or agree to retire on the grounds of efficiency or redundancy, you will be entitled to receive immediate payment of unreduced benefits providing that you:
If you have at least 3 months membership or have transferred previous pension rights into the scheme, you may be eligible to receive your unreduced benefits early on the grounds of ill-health, regardless of your age.
If you continue to work after age 65, you can carry on paying pension contributions and accrue further LGPS membership.

After age 55, your pension will be increased each year in line with the Retail Prices Index.
The Rule of 85 had to be removed from the pension regulations as it broke age discrimination laws.
