Retirement Options
Normal retirement age from the LGPS is age 65 although there are provisions which allow you to retire earlier or later. There are different types of retirement which you may be eligible for depending on your age. You need at least 3 months scheme membership to be eligible for a pension at retirement.
Information in this area
If you have at least 3 months total membership or have brought a transfer value into the LGPS, you can leave the scheme voluntarily and receive your pension benefits at any time from age 60 onwards.
If you have at least 3 months membership or have brought a transfer value into the LGPS, you may be eligible to receive your unreduced benefits early on the grounds of ill-health, regardless of your age.
If you continue in your role after age 65, you can carry on paying pension contributions and accrue further LGPS membership.
If you retire on your 65th birthday, your LGPS pension will automatically be paid to you. There will not be any reductions applied to the pension as you will have achieved the normal retirement age. You do not require your Local Authority’s consent for this type of retirement.
The Rule of 85 had to be removed from the pension regulations as it broke age discrimination laws. The Rule of 85 determined whether you would receive a reduction on your benefits if you retired before age 65.
