Early Retirement

If you have at least 3 months total membership or have brought a transfer value into the LGPS, you can leave the scheme voluntarily and receive your pension benefits at any time from age 60 onwards.

Between and including the ages of 50 and 59 you may also elect to retire and receive your LGPS benefits, but only if your Local Authority gives their consent.

You will need to be aware that if you retire before age 65, some or all of your pension benefits will be reduced unless you were an LGPS member before 1 October 2006 and are eligible for protection under the Rule of 85.

If you joined the scheme on or after 1 October 2006, you WILL have a reduction applied to your benefits if you take them before age 65.

Information in this area
If you have at least 3 months membership or have brought a transfer value into the LGPS, you may be eligible to receive your unreduced benefits early on the grounds of ill-health, regardless of your age.
If you continue in your role after age 65, you can carry on paying pension contributions and accrue further LGPS membership.
If you retire on your 65th birthday, your LGPS pension will automatically be paid to you. There will not be any reductions applied to the pension as you will have achieved the normal retirement age. You do not require your Local Authority’s consent for this type of retirement.
The Rule of 85 had to be removed from the pension regulations as it broke age discrimination laws. The Rule of 85 determined whether you would receive a reduction on your benefits if you retired before age 65.
