Eligible Children
A child’s pension is paid if their parent dies and had LGPS benefits. The child’s pension can only be paid for a limited amount of time. The amount of time depends on what pension regulations the deceased LGPS member is covered by.
If the deceased member left the pension scheme on or before 31st March 2008, a child’s pension can only be paid up to the age of 17 (or up to the age of 23 if the ‘child’ is still in full-time education or training).
If the deceased member left the pension scheme on or after 1st April 2008, a child’s pension can only be paid up to the age of 18 (or up to the age of 23 if the ‘child’ is still in full-time education or training).
Regardless of when the deceased member left the LGPS, a child’s pension may continue to be paid beyond these age limits if the ‘child’ has a disability which renders them unable to work and makes them financially dependant on the deceased parent.
