Archaeology is the study of previous cultures. It looks at where man lived, what he ate, how he made tools and clothes, what rituals or religions he followed and how, once dead, was his body disposed of. It is a study which usually ignores modern boundaries and practices and yet reflects very positively on our lives today.

How do we protect archaeology in Flintshire?

Conservation - we protect and conserve this unique heritage for future generations to enjoy and understand.

Protection - we protect and conserve the county's archaeological and historic landscape through the collection of data, and the provision of advice and awareness through the planning process.

Promotion - the promotion of our archaeological heritage is important in the creation of environmental awareness.

Education - archaeology has much to contribute to the education of all ages and abilities. It covers a broad spectrum of the school curriculum.

In Flintshire there are 115 sites scheduled as ancient monuments of national importance, ranging from the prehistoric hillforts of the Clwydian Hills to the early industrial landscape of Halkyn Mountain.
