Fostering

Health andc Social Care-Fostering/Maethu

An experience that is as rewarding as it is challenging, fostering is where people provide a caring and secure home for children and young people who are not able to live with their families.

A foster carer is someone who looks after children on a temporary basis. This can be anything from a few days to a few years. Fostering can involve looking after all ages of children, from babies to teenagers.

In Flintshire, we currently need foster carers for:

  • Children with brothers and sisters
  • Young teens (age 11-15)

Our foster carers are as different as the children who need their help. You must be over 21, but there is no upper age limit. You can be single, married or living with a partner. You need a secure home with a spare room for one or more children.

Becoming a foster carer starts with an informal visit from a member of the family placement team, followed by a period of training and assessment. This will include police, medical and reference checks. The assessment process can take up to 6 months.
