NEW Housing Company

Flintshire County Council is the first authority in Wales to set up its own housing company. Designed to respond to the challenges experienced by residents in accessing affordable housing, NEW Homes (North East Wales Homes) has been set up by the Council to increase the housing options available to local residents. It will offer a number of tailored housing management services which are designed to increase the quantity and quality of affordable housing across the county. In addition to renting out its own properties, NEW Homes will also run a range of offers for landlords which all include a ‘tenant ready’ service. The company is offering a fully managed letting and property management service and also a unique offer for home owners over 55 to lease their properties to the company and access suitable council accommodation. NEW Homes is owned by Flintshire County Council and has been set up as a company limited by shares with unlimited powers. The Council is the sole shareholder and the board is made up of eight directors consisting of five councillors, one council officer and two independent directors who have experience in the housing field. Councillor Helen Brown, Cabinet Member for Housing said: I am delighted that Flintshire County Council continues to work proactively to meet the housing needs of our residents through the exciting establishment of NEW Homes which will significantly improve the housing options available for our residents. Councillor Aaron Shotton, Leader of Flintshire County Council said: We want to provide a new alternative, affordable, housing offer for local people, who either can not afford high private landlords rents, and or, do not qualify for a Council house. Too many local people, often young people, find that some private rentals are unaffordable and out of reach, and I am proud that Flintshire County Council is the first Council in Wales to take direct action to tackle this problem.
