Soil conditioner

Flintshire County Council’s Streetscene service has delivered three tonnes of soil conditioner to help a local gardening scheme. The skip load of conditioner will improve the existing soil at the Eco Centre at Castle Cement in Padeswood by adding more structure and nutrients, preparing it for planting. The Eco Centre at the company is run by pupils with learning difficulties from Maes Hyfryd School in Flint. They have a polly- tunnel and a number of raised beds, as well as an eco-classroom and a wooded area with a fire pit. Councillor Kevin Jones, Cabinet Member for Waste Strategy, Public Protection and Leisure said: “I’m delighted to see the Council supporting school pupils and local business through recycling. The soil improver will help with the students’ projects and enable them to learn more about sustainable gardening and ecology. The conditioner is made from garden waste collected from Flintshire residents and will now be put to good use at the Eco Centre.” Flintshire’s residents can collect soil conditioner free of charge at the Council’s eight recycling parks. The soil conditioner, which meets the PAS 100 standard, has been produced at the Councils treatment plant in Greenfield. The soil conditioner will be available free of charge for residents to collect. All residents need to do is bring their own bags. The material is available at Greenfield Recycling Centre and, subject to availability, from all other Council recycling centres at Buckley, Connah’s Quay, Flint, Hope, Mold, Queensferry and Saltney.
