Commonwealth Silver Medallist

Published: 19/01/2015

Commonwealth Silver Medallist Sally Peake has visited County Hall, where she was formally congratulated on her achievement. Sally was welcomed by Chairman of Flintshire County Council, Councillor Glenys Diskin, JP, and Leader of the Council, Councillor Aaron Shotton. Sally, who is from Hawarden, achieved her Silver Medal at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow last year for the Pole Vault. As well as competing on the international arena, Sally also works as a physiotherapist, working in the evenings to allow her to train during the day. Sally continues to work as she receives no funding from UK athletics although she is given a small grant from Welsh Athletics. She is currently looking for funding so that she can replace poles that were lost in transit (by the airline) just before the Commonwealth Games. She competed at the Games on borrowed poles. Chairman of the Council, Councillor Glenys Diskin JP, said: “It was an honour and absolute pleasure to welcome Sally to County Hall. I have known Sally and her family for 30 years, and they are a lovely family. To achieve silver at the Commonwealth Games is a fantastic achievement – even more remarkable to do it on borrowed poles. I am hopeful that we can help raise her profile and help her to get some funding.” Councillor Aaron Shotton, Leader of Flintshire County Council, said: “Sally is an inspiration – the county is extremely proud of her. Her dedication, determination and achievements are extremely impressive. Sally deserves to compete on poles of her own. It would be fantastic to find sponsorship for her and I would urge our local businesses to step forward and provide any assistance that they can to Sally. Sally has now set her sights for Rio, and the next Commonwealth Games. She added: I would just like to say thank you very much to Flintshire County Council for the support and recognition shown to me. Hopefully I have inspired some young North Wales athletes to follow their dreams and aspirations too. Anyone who is able to help me, please email me at salimali82@hotmail.com.
