A Flintshire primary school has achieved a prestigious national award
recognising its commitment to promoting health and wellbeing.
Bryn Coch CP School in Mold is the third school in the county to be awarded the
Healthy Schools National Quality Award which is awarded to schools that have
achieved the highest standards of health and well-being. To achieve this
award, schools take part in the scheme for a minimum of nine years, and cover
seven health themes set out by Welsh Government which are:
• Food and fitness
• The environment
• Hygiene
• Mental and emotional health and well being
• Personal development and relationships
• Safety
• Substance use and misuse
The school started the scheme in 2002 which is run by the PSE Coordinator, Mrs
Dawn Jones. All staff are actively involved in the scheme and value the
importance of health and well being for their whole school community.
Mrs Lynne Williams, Head teacher said: “We are extremely proud to be receiving
the National Quality Award of the Welsh Network of Healthy Schools Scheme. This
award is the culmination of many years of hard work, changing the attitudes and
lifestyle choices of our pupils, parents and staff.
“I would like to express my thanks to the children who have embraced all the
changes for example moving from eating crisps at playtime to only eating fruit,
to the parents who have helped with the healthy school message and for
providing healthy packed lunches and to the staff, lunchtime staff and
governors who have embraced all the seven health topics.
“Thanks also to the Local Education Authority, in particular Claire Broad who
has supported the school throughout. I am very pleased for Mrs Dawn Jones and
all those involved who led the school to this prestigious award, which has
improved the wellbeing of our 658 pupils.”
Included within the assessment report, the lead assessor stated that…
“Well done and thank you to all the pupils in Ysgol Bryn Coch for helping to
make your school a happy and healthy school! You have a great school where you
can not only learn, but where there are so many opportunities for you to
participate in different activities and shine in so many ways.”
Ian Budd, Chief Officer Education and Youth said: “I am extremely proud of the
school’s achievement. Staff, pupils, parents and the whole school community are
to be praised for their continual support for the scheme.”

to everyone at the school. The award and recognition for Healthy Schools is
well deserved after 12 years of great efforts, you should all be very proud of
