Lego family workshops

The well-known children’s toy Lego has become part of an initiative to encourage Flintshire families to support their children’s education. The ‘Tackling Poverty: Developing Skills’ project funded by NIACE Cymru and organised by West Flintshire Communities First with Flintshire Libraries and G2G Communities CIC has set up a number of Lego family learning workshops across Mold, Flint and Holywell. The first session took place at Mold Library under the guidance of staff from G2G Communities CIC on Thursday 11 September. Once the initial challenge, to build a stable tower using 15 pieces of Lego, was completed, each child built a section of a Lego theme park visited by Lego people. The families then joined together to build robots from a kit following instructions conveyed on a computer screen. Janiene Davies, Communities First Learning Officer said: “This is the first in many family learning workshops being delivered in the community offering intergenerational learning that helps parents and carers to become more successfully engaged with and support their children in their education.” Councillor Derek Butler, Cabinet Member for Economic Development said: “Supporting children in their education can make a huge difference to their schoolwork and eventually exam performance so it’s particularly important to get involved at an early age.” For further information on the workshops can be found at Mold, Flint and Holywell libraries or contact Janiene 01352 705931 or janiene_davies@flintshire.gov.uk.
