Meet the local team who find foster carers in Flintshire

Published: 20/08/2018

Fostering Team 01.jpgIn Flintshire last year, 69 local children came in to foster care. This included 20 babies and toddlers, five primary school age, 16 early teens and 20 aged over 15.

The majority of these children were cared for by the 123 local authority foster carers with Flintshire County Council.

The common reasons for children coming into foster care are children who are being hurt or neglected with parents living very chaotic lives involving drug and alcohol use and domestic violence.

Flintshire County Council’s Cabinet Member for Social Services, Councillor Christine Jones, said:

“This team of dedicated people is based in Flint and, along with the child’s dedicated social worker and the current foster carers across the county, they work as a team to support the young people.

“Our problem is that our wonderful experienced foster carers are full.  They are already caring for children long term and we have new children coming into foster care who need a loving, safe, caring home. Our experienced foster carers are also retiring and we need new carers to start fostering.”

There are lots of different types of fostering to suit you and your family, even starting gradually by offering sleepovers, weekend and school holiday support. We recommend that you foster children who are younger than any other children at home. It is important that you can consider caring for a wide age range of children.

Councillor Jones continued:

“We are looking for people who, ideally, have some experience of working with children - perhaps in their job in a school, nursing or even as a scout leader or experience of raising their own children. We also need people whose own children are at least 10 years old, or ideally over 18. This will allow us to consider you to care for lots of different children. It doesn’t matter is you are single, married, young or old.”

Flintshire fostering team is holding information sessions in the local area for anyone to come along and find out more about fostering.
