From 1st March 2016, payment by credit card for most services will be subject to a handling fee of 1.45% of the transaction value.
The handling fee is a small charge that only applies when you make a payment by credit card rather than a debit card. There are no additional fees for payment by debit card.
By applying handling fees, the Council can recoup most of the expensive transaction charges it pays to credit card companies when credit cards are used to pay for Council services. The Council won’t make money from the additional fees and we encourage customers, where possible, to pay by debit card to avoid the handling fees.
If customers still wish to pay by credit card, the Council’s payment system will identify whether a card is a credit or debit card so will automatically add an additional 1.45% fee for credit card transactions. The 1.45% fee will be clearly shown on the payment screen before customers are asked to accept the total amount payable which would also include the handling fee
